In Loving Memory of,
#19 Derek Matty

Derek Johnathon Matty (Feb 1, 1982 - May 3, 2003) will be remembered for his caring character, unstoppable laughter, funky hair and radiant smile. "Matty" didn't carry grudges nor seek revenge when treated unjustly. "Life is too short...all's good," he'd say. #19 could easily become #1 in people's hearts because of his energy, love for life and charisma. Although Derek wasn't the toughest, nor the fastest skater, he'd melt the ice and warm the hearts of the refs, fans, team-mates and opposing players. His love to play hockey, dogged determination, fluid style, zestful antics helped make him popular. Yet, Derek cared about relationships and included others. He was described as a "lover and not a fighter."

No one questioned his loyalty: He pulled an I.V. out of his badly infected elbow to continue playing in the 2002 Provincial Finals. He sacrificed his role in the movie "Miracle on Ice" to play his heart out in the PIJHL finals against the Richmond Sockeyes. His friends, team-mates, family and community were all more valuable to him than personal stardom.

Derek's motto was "Live life to the Fullest". Whether it was on or off the ice, he crammed as much as he could into it. He taught us how to play the real game of life: "Work hard and do your best with the talents and skills God gave you, but also have fun". We will miss, but not forget, his encouraging, humorous, inspiring words and deeds. May we continue his legacy by being "team players" on and off the ice. Remember Derek, "Mark Messier plays for the Canucks!" (We love you)
